The spectrum of lap belt injuries sustained by two cousins in the same motor vehicle crash.

چکیده
4) The entire class of seat belt-related flexion-distraction injuries to the spine are commonly referred to as ‘Chance-type’ fractures. These fractures are caused by hyperflexion around a lap belt, with the belt acting as a fulcrum. This mechanism of hyperflexion and distraction would also explain the frequent association of intraabdominal injuries as viscera are crushed between the lap belt and the spine.

Seat-belt injuries in children involved in motor vehicle crashes.
BACKGROUND The efficacy of seat belts in reducing deaths from motor vehicle crashes is well documented. A unique association of injuries has emerged in adults and children with the use of seat belts. The "seat-belt syndrome" refers to the spectrum of injuries associated with lap-belt restraints, particularly flexion-distraction injuries to the spine (Chance fractures). METHODS We describe the...

متن کاملHigh crash areas resulting in injuries and deaths in Tehran traffic areas from november 2011 through february 2012: a geographic information system analysis
Background: Evaluation of intra-city roads in terms of environmental factors of motor vehicle injuries can help us to better identify these factors and the share of each of the factors in injuries. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the high injury areas and the risk factors of motor vehicle crashes resulting in injury and death in Tehran, the capital city of Iran, from November...
متن کاملThe lap belt complex: intestinal and lumbar spine injury in children.
The "seatbelt syndrome" describes intestinal and spinal injury caused by lap-style automotive restraints. More than 2,600 children were admitted to Children's National Medical Center with blunt injury in 3 years; 395 were involved in a motor vehicle crash. Ninety-five of the crash occupants (24%) were known to be wearing safety belts. Ten children sustained a "lap belt injury": five with lumbar...
متن کاملShoulder belts in motor vehicle crashes: a statewide analysis of restraint efficacy.
The purpose of our study was to evaluate the impact of shoulder belt use on motor vehicle crash ejection, morbidity and mortality. We analyzed motor vehicle crash records linked to hospital inpatient data for front seat occupants of passenger cars in Utah between 1994 and 1996 (n = 103,035). Stochastic simulations were used to adjust for possible seatbelt misclassification. There were 276 (0.3%...
